Jurgen Klopp’s Reds finished just one point and one place behind Manchester City in the title race last season and begin their battle to go one better this time around against the newly promoted Cottagers on Saturday lunchtime.

Centre-back Ibrahima Konate has joined an injury list that already includes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (hamstring), Diogo Jota (thigh), Curtis Jones (calf), second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher (groin) and Kostas Tsimikas ( touch), with Naby Keita also gone. Darwin Núñez scores as Liverpool twice come behind but are held in check by newly promoted Fulham

Although Liverpool were well below their best, Fulham and Aleksandar Mitrovic could finally be showing that they have risen to the required level.

That felt the most significant element of this hugely entertaining 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage, although most of the discussion will focus mainly on how Jurgen Klopp’s men have already fallen behind in the title race. That was because there were many stretches of this game where they couldn’t keep up with Fulham. Marco Silva’s side were the opposite of a pushover here as they took the game to Liverpool. Silva nailed it and his team should have achieved more.

Epitomizing so much of this, however, Mitrovic completely took over the match. He even embarrassed Virgil van Dijk, who drew the penalty for the second of his two goals. Klopp even had to bring on his own big striker, in expensive new signing Darwin Núñez, to even things up and secure a draw.

90+3 min: Alexander-Arnold throws the ball into the area and tries to play Mo Salah. Fulham clear the ball to Aleksandar Mitrovic who holds it brilliantly and then crawls down.

He’s fine, but he’s making time-wasting moves to get his team closer to the finish line.

Fulham 2-2 Liverpool

90 minutes: Five minutes of added time to play. That seems pretty excessive.

Fulham 2-2 Liverpool

87 mins: Fulham seem to be feeling it now. They are trying to slow the game down when they have possession and Andreas Pereira takes his time coming off the pitch as Tom Cairney comes on.

At least Fulham deserve a point from this game. They’ve been great.
