Ryan Giggs: former Wales captain and Manchester United star on trial for domestic violence

The trial of former Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs resumed for a fourth day on Thursday at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.

Mr Giggs, 48, is accused of controlling and coercive behavior towards his ex-girlfriend, PR executive Kate Greville, 36, between August 2017 and November 2020, having -assaulted her, causing actual bodily harm and the common assault of her younger sister.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

On Wednesday, Ms Greville faced cross-examination from defense barrister Christopher Daws QC and described feeling like a “slave to [Mr Giggs’] every need and every demand” during their on-off relationship.

“That’s what it felt like,” he told the court. “If Ryan told me to do something, I would do it. He made me feel like I had to do everything he said or there would be consequences.”

She described initially seeing him as a “knight in shining armour” rescuing her from an unhappy marriage, before he “lured” her into an affair and gradually became “regularly aggressive”, speculating that he might be suffering from narcissistic disorder the personality

Defense probes Greville’s approach to Giggs to help set up new business

Daws begins by asking Mrs Greville about her seeking Mr Giggs’ support in her ambitions to set up her own business.

It cites a June 17, 2019 text message from the complainant in which she writes: “I need to talk about setting up my business….I need your advice and guidance…”

“I’ll sort it all out baby xx,” was Mr Giggs’ response.

“Are you actively seeking their support and guidance in relation to your business,” asks the QC.

“We were in a relationship and that’s what people in a relationship usually do,” he replies.

Mr Daw then points to an example of Mr Giggs taking his side in an argument with his own best friend, another attempt to paint his client as a trusted and supportive partner.
