Dundee finish off Arbroath in a six-goal thriller

Luke McCowan fired Dundee into the lead

Dundee beat last season’s Scottish Championship runners-up to end Arbroath’s six-match unbeaten start to the season after a six-goal thriller.

Luke McCowan put the hosts into a deserved lead only for Nicky Low to equalize with a penalty either side of the break.

Zak Rudden put Dundee ahead but Colin Hamilton hit back.

However, a header from Zach Robinson and a superb curler from Josh Mulligan sealed a home win in the dying minutes.

Arbroath were left to rue replacement striker Dale Hilson’s miss from five yards with three minutes remaining and the scores level at 2-2.

Dick Campbell’s part-timers had made the short trip to Dens Park after starting the league season with two goalless draws following four consecutive League Cup group wins by conceding a single goal

However, despite the visitors starting the brighter in an end-to-end game, Dundee were relegated which was worthy of their second win in three league games under new manager Gary Bowyer.

Dundee manager Gary Bowyer: “I thought it was a very good game, very competitive. It was two teams going head-to-head and we managed to come out on top.

“I think the first half we had to handle a little bit of pressure and we came out and started to get into the game. We were clinical tonight, which is nice, especially in front of this crowd.”

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell: “You have to defend well. At 2-2, we have a great chance to win the game and then we make two stupid, stupid mistakes.

“I don’t have any real problems other than getting those mistakes out of the way. We had a few chances to score but you can’t make mistakes like you did against a team like Dundee and expect to come away with anything.”
