Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel admits the list of transfer targets he gave new owner Todd Boehly was ‘unrealistic’ and a ‘fantasy’… but claims his side could challenge for the title if get them all

  • Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea have had a mixed transfer window this summer
  • They have signed the likes of Raheem Sterling, but a number of deals have taken place
  • The Blues could still bring in Frenkie de Jong among other star players
  • Tuchel hinted that Conor Gallagher and Callum Hudson-Odoi could leave

Thomas Tuchel admits the initial transfer targets he gave new owner Todd Boehly to turn Chelsea into title contenders were a fantasy list beyond the realms of reach.

But as Chelsea prepare to face Tottenham today, Tuchel insists the club’s ambitions can rise beyond the top four if they land their latest summer signings.

They have Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Carney Chukwuemeka in what is believed to be their biggest summer spend, with one more signing meaning it would top anything former owner Roman Abramovich did.

They can still add Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Leicester’s Wesley Fofana, who is said to have agreed personal terms. And if they do, Tuchel will improve his goals.

Asked if he could win the league without more signings, Tuchel said: “I don’t want to artificially limit our ambitions in August and I don’t want to put pressure on ourselves by making any numbers we want to reach. Every team is fighting for the top four this league and if in March and April you are in the race, you are in the race.

“I gave Todd a list and it would have been possible to directly challenge for the title with those signings. But that was a pretty unrealistic list! We can play fantasy football.

“In the end we have to pay for it, we have to convince players and other clubs to give us their best players, it’s just not happening. I’m very happy with what we’ve achieved so far. They’re fantastic signings. If it doesn’t end, we try to bring more quality and with more quality, of course, the level of ambition increases’.

The club’s biggest summer spending spree to date was two years ago when they splashed out £221m, although that came after a year-long transfer ban.

The club have spent £167m this summer and Boehly has delivered on his promise to invest.

However, the escalating spending calls into question the value of the club’s academy, which had thrived in recent years.

While Mason Mount and Reece James are already established in the team, Callum Hudson-Odoi has been forced further down by the arrival of Sterling, while Conor Gallagher’s prospects look bleak after a season advanced in the middle of the field loaned to Crystal Palace, especially. if De Jong arrives.

Hudson-Odoi didn’t even make the bench last weekend and the synergy with the academy under Frank Lampard appears to be submerged by transfer activity.

Tuchel has hinted that Gallagher and Hudson-Odoi could be sold, with Crystal Palace and Borussia Dortmund respectively set to go on loan. But Tuchel insisted they must stay and fight for their place.

He added: “Generally, nobody is for sale and everybody is for sale. It depends on what the player wants, how the players want it, what we think, who is willing to pay a certain amount of money.

‘For Callum, compete. He had long-term problems to overcome that he suffered. I think he still has a way to go to live up to his potential, because the potential is huge. Having Raheem can perhaps give him the extra push to step up.

‘Conor fights in the middle of the field. It’s a tough fight for him because we only have two places in midfield, which is a bit unfair considering the number of players we have in midfield. But we have to do what’s best for the squad, not what’s best for each individual player.”
