4 Foods That Make Your Joint Pain Worse: Eat This, Not That

If you experience joint pain or swelling regularly, you know the excruciating frustration of a sudden flare-up. While there are several reasons why someone may experience constant joint pain, one of the most common reasons is arthritis.

You may think that arthritis is just one disease, but there are actually over 100 types of arthritis that someone can have, and all of them are related to joint pain or joint disease.

Although this is an incredibly frustrating disease to live with, there are ways to ease the pain and manage flare-ups of joint swelling, and one of the ways to do this is through diet.

“Refined carbohydrates and added sugars should be avoided or reduced in the arthritis patient’s diet,” says Best, “because they are highly inflammatory and can trigger an arthritis flare-up or worsen the pain of an existing flare-up. “.

In a survey of rheumatoid arthritis patients, desserts and sugary drinks were among the top items reported to worsen participants’ joint symptoms.

This doesn’t mean you have to give up dessert forever, but it’s a good idea to monitor how much added sugar you’re consuming and perhaps opt for natural sugars like fruit when you can.

For the average person who it doesn’t have arthritis, good quality foods that contain gluten can be perfectly fine and safe to eat. Unfortunately, for those who suffer from constant joint pain, gluten can be a contributing factor to their flare-ups.

Gluten and wheat-containing products have been found to cause inflammation over time, and inflammation is directly related to joint pain and swelling. In a report published in Open Journal of Rheumatologyconcluded that a plant-based, gluten-free diet had a positive impact on the relief of arthritis symptoms and joint pain.

However, we are certainly not suggesting that anyone should go gluten-free. Products that contain gluten may have helpful levels of fiber for people who are not living with arthritis or another autoimmune disease.

Highly processed foods can be delicious and affordable, but this food comes with negative side effects, including the ability to worsen joint pain and inflammation.

According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutritionhigher consumption of red meat was associated with more inflammation. Frontiers in nutrition also concluded that dropping red meat and going plant-based can help ease arthritis symptoms.

You don’t have to say goodbye to any of these foods forever, but significantly reducing the amount you consume will help ease joint pain and hopefully provide lasting relief.
