Ruben Loftus-Cheek played his best game in Chelsea’s history in Sunday’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Tottenham, according to Pat Nevin.
The Blues were involved in a fiery clash at Stamford Bridge at the weekend, which ultimately ended in a draw between the London rivals in the Premier League clash. There is no doubt that Thomas Tuchel’s side were the dominant team on the day.
Kalidou Koulibaly’s superb volley put the hosts ahead in a first half which they completely dominated. Hopefully, it’s the kind of team performance that gives everyone a big boost going forward.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg equalized for visiting Spurs midway through the second half before Reece James restored Chelsea’s lead when he headed home Raheem Sterling’s pass.
Finally, Harry Kane stole a point in injury time with his goal from a set piece.
The rivalry between Chelsea and Spurs shows no signs of slowing down as managers Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte both suffered on a couple of occasions. Tuchel explained in his post-match interview the clash with his opposite number.
Loftus-Cheek against Tottenham
Nevin singled out Chelsea’s Loftus-Cheek for immense praise after his contribution against Spurs.
The 26-year-old started and impressed in a right-back role, which is a position he has played in a few times.
Nevin got off to a brave start in what was the Chelsea academy graduate’s best ever appearance.
“I’ve seen Ruben Loftus-Cheek play the best game of football he’s ever played for Chelsea Football Club, and I’m very comfortable saying that,” he said.
“Hopefully now is Ruben’s time. We’ve waited a long, long time. Keep up that kind of standard and you’ll be huge for us.
Nevin alluded to the fact that Chelsea have waited a while to see the best of Loftus-Cheek, whose career has plummeted since arriving on the scene.
However, he looks excellent under Tuchel in this wide role. He showed his versatility by dropping into a more familiar central midfield position later on, too.
