EXCLUSIVE ‘designer vagina’ surgeries DOUBLE in a year because ultra-tight sports leggings have become so popular, claims plastic surgeon.
- The rise of tight sports leggings has seen more women experience pain and irritation
- This, in turn, has led to an increase in labiaplasty to remove tissue that causes genital pain
- The surgeon says he has now treated more women in the first part of 2022 than in all of 2021
The number of women seeking “designer vaginas” has doubled in recent years due to the growing popularity of sports leggings, a top plastic surgeon claims.
Labiaplasties involve reducing the size of the labia minora (the flaps of skin on either side of the vaginal opening) and cost up to £4,000.
Dr. John Skevofilax, chief surgeon at Signature Clinics, said he performed about 50 of the procedures in 2021.
But a surge in demand over the past year meant it had already surpassed that number by the first half of 2022.
Dr Skevofilax told MailOnline that women were increasingly seeking labiaplasty because tight clothing such as leggings is uncomfortable and “draws attention to the lips”.
“Exercise clothes are a little tighter and tighter, so they put pressure on the area,” she said.
“They experience pain, discomfort in general, irritation, many women will actually feel so uncomfortable that they avoid trying to wear these types of clothes.
“It’s all very connected, choosing leggings that cause discomfort and that, in turn, draw attention to the lips and the need for surgery.”

Famous stars like Kim Kardashian have been partially credited with popularizing the use of tight leggings while working out and for casual wear.
What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is surgery to reduce the size of the labia minora, the flaps of skin on either side of the vaginal opening.
It involves cutting away unwanted tissue with a laser scalpel in a procedure that takes one to two hours.
Some women have labiaplasty because they don’t like the way their lips look.
However, the NHS advises that it is completely normal to have noticeable folds of skin around the opening of the vagina.
Since in most cases this does not cause any problems, labiaplasty is rarely available in NHs.
Women considering labiaplasty are urged to speak to their GP first, who may encourage them to speak to a counselor or psychologist before undergoing the surgery.
In the UK, a labiaplasty costs between £2,000 and £4,000, although the cost can vary depending on the extent of the procedure.
Labiaplasty is generally only offered in exceptional circumstances, such as to remove cancerous tissue in cases of vulvar cancer.
Leggings are believed to have become fashionable in the 1970s thanks to some of the biggest celebrities of the decade such as Debbie Harry and the late Olivia Newton-John.
But in recent years they’ve been replaced by skin-tight sports leggings that have coincided with the rise of gym culture.
Sometimes called “athleisure,” a cross between gym and casual wear, the style has been popularized by reality TV stars the Kardashians.
Dr Skevofilax said 80% of women seeking labiaplasty were now looking to address discomfort while wearing tight clothing rather than for cosmetic reasons.
Designer vaginas were previously thought to have been fueled by unrealistic body images in pornography.
But Dr Skevofilax said this was “dangerous and misleading” as it fostered a sense of shame for women seeking help for the pain they experience throughout their lives.
“Women should be able to wear whatever they want,” she said.
“If they choose tight clothing such as yoga pants because they’re following a specific fashion trend or simply because it’s more appropriate for that type of exercise, they should be able to do so without anxiety and ‘lip-biting’ what should to come.
“I’ve actually never had a patient say, ‘I want my vagina to look like this or that porn star.’
Dr. Skevofilax, on the other hand, attributed an increase in labiaplasty to women who were more open about their experiences with the pain of wearing tight clothing and the solutions.
When women want a labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons, Dr. Skevofilax said he had a long chat during the consultation to make sure the treatment was right for them.
“By doing this we can make sure that people make the right decisions for themselves,” he said.
Dr Skevofilax is a surgeon with 15 years’ experience, with Signature Clinics located across the UK including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Cardiff.
Labiaplasty involved using a scalpel or laser to reduce the size of the labia minora—the flaps of skin found on either side of the vaginal opening.
The procedure can be done under general or local anesthesia and can last between one and two hours.
Labiaplasty generally costs between £2,000 and £4,000 in a private clinic, although the total price may depend on the extent of the work being done.
As it is considered a cosmetic procedure, it is only available on the NHS in rare circumstances.
These include removing cancerous tissue if a woman has vulvar cancer.
