RYAN Giggs admitted he is a “love cheat” as he took to the dock today to defend himself against allegations he headbutted his ex.
The former Man Utd ace admitted he has never been able to stay faithful to any woman and has lied to ex-wife Stacey Giggs and other girlfriends “many times”.
Asked by Chris Daw QC, defending him, he said he is unable to resist an attractive woman, regardless of whether he is in a relationship or not.
However, he said he has “never” physically assaulted a woman on any occasion.
Moments after he began testifying, Daw asked, “You’re known in news articles as a love cheat. Is that reputation justified?”
Giggs – who confirmed he is a “flirter by nature” – replied: “Yes.”
The lawyer said, “In the course of your relationship with women, have you managed to be faithful to any of them?”
The soccer player said, “No.”
He was then asked if he had ever “lied” to his ex-wife and other partners, to which he replied: “I have, yes … many times.”
The sportsman admitted that even marriage wouldn’t stop him after he was asked: “If you’re attracted to a woman regardless of your marital status, can you resist?”
It comes after jurors heard this morning that he told police he may have “caught” ex-girlfriend Kate Greville in the head during a “fight” as they rowed about their alleged affairs.
But he flatly denied attacking her or doing it deliberately in a prepared statement given to police hours after his arrest.
Both he and Kate were married when they met and started a relationship. She left her husband six months after their romance began, but Giggs said she wanted to “have her cake and eat it too” by maintaining a family life and continuing the affair.
He finally left Stacey in May 2016 after she found out about their relationship.
On the night of his arrest, he and Kate had argued when he took her phone in a cheating fight.
And he claimed she had attacked him first, jurors at Manchester Crown Court heard. When she went to call the police, his head “bumped” into hers, she said.
“Unfortunately, Kate and I had an argument that we got into a fight over my phone which she had taken,” the statement reads.
“I accept that during the fight he grabbed me in the face, causing bleeding on his lip and inside his mouth.
“I’M A LOVE CHEAT”
“He may have grabbed her and her sister during the fight, but at no point was there any attempt to harm either of them.”
He said he “regrets” the fight, adding: “I accept that during that fight my head collided with hers… I did not consciously try to hit Kate.”
Giggs, 48, said tensions rose when he asked Kate and her sister Emma, 26, to leave their home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, but they refused.
But he denies actual bodily harm, control and coercive behaviour, and assaulting Emma by beating her.
The footballer was arrested in November last year following allegations he attacked PR director Kate at her £1.7m mansion after a night out with friends at the hotel in the Manchester Stock Exchange.
He became “really angry” when Kate didn’t refer to him as her “boyfriend” before attacking her as she packed her belongings with Emma and called an Uber, it was heard.
Today, the court heard that Giggs had defended their relationship in his statement to police.
“For many people, the lockdown was hard,” he said.
CLAIM OF CAP
“Although I agree [the relationship] it wasn’t perfect, it was mostly love and affection.”
He said “incidents happened” after Kate drank, adding: “I would never react violently.”
Despite their problems, the couple had bought two dogs and planned to move house, it was said.
“I thought we were planning a future together,” Giggs told police.
However, Kate claimed last week that she had been plotting her escape from her ‘toxic’ relationship by secretly signing up for a new flat after learning he was cheating with 12 women.
He claimed that living with Giggs during the lockdown was “absolute hell” as he faced a “cycle of abuse” and became a “slave to his every need and demand”.
Jurors have also heard claims Kate told bosses the bruises on her arms were from “rough sex” after an incident at a hotel in 2017.
His employers were forced to block Giggs’ “intense” emails because they were “interfering with his work”, it was claimed.
Kate was said to be seen again with bruises on her arms after an incident in February 2020. She alleged that Giggs had “got physical” with her in a hotel room.
Louisa Hamm, a friend of the complainant, said she had seen marks on Kate’s arms that month when they were on holiday.
She told the court today: “Kate mentioned… that she had had an argument with Ryan, quite an awful argument.
“During the argument, Ryan had grabbed her, resulting in the bruise.”
But Mr Daw asked: “Did you know that Kate and Ryan engaged in sexual behavior that sometimes left them bruised?”
In another incident, Giggs is said to have thrown a naked Kate from her room at London’s posh Stafford Hotel after throwing a laptop bag at her head and kicking her.
The trial continues.
