In an emotional post, the boxer said: “My cousin was killed last night, stabbed in the neck.

“This is getting ridiculous – idiots are carrying knives. This has to stop.”

He asked the Government to “bring back the highest sentences for knife crime”, and added: “It’s a pandemic.

“You don’t know how hard it is until it’s one of your own.

“Life is very precious and it can be taken away very quickly. Enjoy every moment.

“RIP Rico Burton – May the Lord God grant you a good place in heaven, see you soon.”

Rico, 31, a former boxer who trained with Fury, is understood to have been shot dead outside a bar in Altrincham, Manchester, shortly after 3am.

Police attended the scene in Goose Green after reports that two men had been stabbed.

Rico was taken to hospital but tragically died a short time later. A 17-year-old remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

A 21-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault and remains in custody, with police opening a murder investigation.

Tributes flooded Rico today.

Steve Egan, Rico and Fury’s former trainer, said he was “devastated” to hear of the tragedy.

The 60-year-old, a trainer at Manchester’s Jimmy Egan Boxing Academy, said Rico had won two national titles fighting as a junior at the gym and boxed until he was 19.

He left to pursue a career in roofing and construction.

“I feel like crying,” Steve said.

“He was a great guy, I used to call him our Billy Joe Saunders because he was a good fighter.”

TRIBUTE TRIBUTES

Rico’s mother will be distraught, he said, adding: “It will end with her.

“He was always smiling, he knows his boxing is up. He loves his mom, his brother and his cousin.”

Bar workers who watched the tragedy unfold have been left ‘shocked and shaken’, with Michael Edwards, who lives nearby, telling The Sun: ‘It’s really shocking when something like this happens.

“It’s terrible that so many people carry knives these days.”

Rico’s death comes amid a wave of knife and gun violence across the UK, much of it centered in London.

Four men were stabbed in Brixton last night. Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Earlier this week, Lee Byer, 44, was charged with murdering Thomas O’Halloran. The 87-year-old man was stabbed in Greenford while riding his mobility scooter.

And last year, the number of people killed in the capital reached an all-time high.

Across the country, there was a 10% increase in knife crime in England and Wales to March 2022 compared to the previous year.

In that time period, police recorded 49,027 knife crimes, the biggest percentage increase since 2019.

THE PAIN OF FURY

Knife crime has also risen by almost 50% compared to the year to March 2012.

Two-time world heavyweight champion Fury penned the emotional post just hours after vowing to come out of retirement and face Oleksandr Usyk in a world title fight.

The Ukrainian put on a masterclass to beat Anthony Joshua and defend his belts last night in Saudi Arabia.

Usyk, 35, claimed it was either retirement or the Gypsy King next.

This morning Fury, 34, confirmed he is ready to return to the ring to reclaim his heavyweight titles.

He said in a now-deleted Instagram post: “Just saw Joshua lose for the second time to Usyk, out of his depth.

“Nevertheless, England have been released from their belts. Once again, as usual.

“There is a remedy and a solution that I can suggest. If you want these belts back, send the gypsy barbarian from England. Come!

“Send me in. I’ll take the Ukrainian file off their belts like I did the last Ukrainian file.

“But it won’t be cheap. If you want the best you have to pay, it will be very expensive.

“So get out your fucking checkbook and I’ll relieve this Ukrainian file.”

He previously revealed that it would take £500 million to get him to fight again, but claimed he would beat both Usyk and AJ on the same night immediately after the bout in Jeddah.

After watching them on TV with his family and friends on holiday in Menorca, he railed: “After watching that, they were both bastards. It was one of the worst heavyweight title fights I’ve ever seen.

“They were bulls***. Come on!”

Fury, who was born in Manchester, comes from a large family. He and his wife Paris, 31, have six children. They live in Lancashire, although the boxer also has a home in Las Vegas.
