Chelsea sack Tuchel LIVE: Graham Potter holds talks over manager's job

The pressure is on me – Tuchel

Chelsea have sacked Thomas Tuchel following their 1-0 Champions League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday, and the club will now open talks with Brighton manager Graham Potter.

Tuchel guided the Blues to their second Champions League triumph in 2021 but had struggled so far this season, with a third defeat this week following Premier League defeats to Leeds and Southampton.

A club statement on Wednesday morning said: “As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as they continue their hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the time is right to make that transition.”

Chelsea have moved quickly and have been granted permission to open talks with Potter, who has impressed since taking charge at Brighton.

Carragher believes Chelsea should go for Pochettino over Potter

Carragher: “Potter is definitely one of the best managers in England, the job he’s doing at the moment. If you ask me, I’d go for Pochettino.

“The new manager is expected to be at least in the top four and win trophies. If you think about Thomas Tuchel’s record, he was still not good enough. There will be no bed linen during the period and he is expected to win trophies straight away “.

Thomas Tuchel’s sacking ‘huge shock’, says Carragher.

Jamie Carragher believes Thomas Tuchel’s sacking came as a huge shock as he expected different from Chelsea’s new owners.

“It’s what we’ve come to expect from the Roman Abramovich era,” the former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports. “A lot of great managers like Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte were sacked and I felt it was going to be a different regime, so it’s a big shock.

“It hasn’t been a great start, but Chelsea needed the transfer window to finish, get the squad they wanted and let a top quality manager get the chance to build the team.”

Pep Guardiola is a ‘big fan’ of Graham Potter

Pep Guardiola on Graham Potter: “It’s a joy to see them and analyze them, when you see them you worry about their quality.

“We have to be at a high level to compete against them. The quality they have in every game, they have better stats in every department except maybe the final third.

“I’m a big fan of Graham Potter. big fan I played them for the first time against Swansea, everyone was playing their position, the ball was getting to their position, no players were moving, everyone had the freedom to move and the courage to play everywhere.”

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea record

Chelsea: Highest win percentage in all competitions

  • Antonio Conte: 65.09%
  • Jose Mourinho: 63.55%
  • Carlo Ancelotti: 61.47%
  • Thomas Tuchel: 60.00%
  • Claudio Ranieri: 53.77%
  • Gianluca Vialli: 53.15%

Chelsea suffer a shock defeat against Dinamo Zagreb in the first leg of the Champions League

Mislav Orsic’s opener condemned Chelsea to a crushing 1-0 Champions League defeat at Dinamo Zagreb.

Croatia striker Orsic’s goal was enough for Dinamo to topple the 2021 Champions League winners at the Maksimir Stadium.

Reece James hit the post at the death, but Dinamo were not to be denied such a famous and deserved win for the hosts as it could prove damaging for the Blues.

Thomas Tuchel’s rudderless and bland Chelsea dominated possession from start to finish but were worryingly toothless in the final third.

What is it like to play Potter?

With Graham Potter heavily backed as Chelsea’s next boss, what qualities will he bring to Stamford Bridge?

Nathan Dyer, who played with Graham Potter at Swansea, spoke to Sky Sports News about what it’s like to play with the 47-year-old.

“He’s a players’ coach, he’s also a problem solver and he’ll always make sure he does everything right for the players.” he said,

“In turn, the players want to play for him. Also tactically he was amazing in making sure that when we got on the pitch everyone knew what they were doing.

“I think what he would bring to Chelsea is exactly that, he will make sure he hits the ground running and can solve problems. He is one of the new managers, he is a visionary.”

10 in 10 years

Since January 2012, Chelsea have had 10 different managers. Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, Rafael Benitez, Jose Mourinho, Steve Holland, Guus Hiddink, Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri, Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel’s tenure lasted one year, seven months and 12 days, but the honor of the shortest reign at Stamford Bridge during that time goes to Andre Villas-Boas.

The Portuguese manager was in charge for just 256 days before getting the axe.

Leboeuf on the dismissal of Tuchel

Former Chelsea player Frank Leboeuf has been speaking to Sky Sports News about the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.

“It’s a shock. We suffered two shocks in 24 hours.” Said Leboeuf: “The first was the absolutely awful game the Blues had yesterday, and today they decided to get rid of Thomas Tuchel.

“The owner seemed impatient, in many ways. Yes, I’m in shock, but I can understand that Chelsea – the way they play – the board wants to react.”

On Graham Potter possibly becoming the new boss, Leboeuf added: “He could be the man. It’s not because you’re a star because you’re called Conte or Ancelotti.

“Graham Potter can bring something new, and it’s not about experience, it’s about ideas.

“I am sure that this man can withstand the pressure of a big club. If Mr. Boehly is going to pick him, it’s because they believe he’s capable of being the best.

“We’ve seen some so-called great star managers who have not been successful.”

Thomas Tuchel’s departure is a self-inflicted wound after Chelsea’s spending spree

Jurgen Klopp has welcomed five Chelsea managers, plus the odd caretaker, during his time at Liverpool, but it was only four when he studied Thomas Tuchel’s legacy. “This Chelsea team is a gift and I’m pretty sure Thomas sees it that way,” he said in January 2021.

A few weeks later, Chelsea won at Anfield; three months later, they won the Champions League. Klopp might have excelled as an analyst, but Tuchel proved to be the alchemist, taking a group that was ninth when Frank Lampard was fired to continental glory.

Now it is Tuchel who has been sacked. He succeeded at high speed, but his reign unraveled just as quickly. His successor may consider the equipment he has bequeathed to be a gift; for Tuchel, it looked like an expensive mess. Tuchel flourished with other managers’ players and failed with his own, albeit on a small sample. Chelsea spent around £260m this summer to get worse; without a doubt, fall into crisis within seven games.

Why does he want Chelsea Potter?

Chelsea are believed to be looking for a long-term manager who can change the culture of the club and focus on the development of every player in the squad.

Graham Potter can work within complicated football structures and tends to bring out the best in those players who accept his methodology.

Brighton sold Marc Cucurella to Chelsea and Yves Bissouma to Tottenham this summer and spent far less on replacements, but despite the departures, the squad has continued to improve.

Potter’s side also play an attractive style of football which will have caught the eye of Chelsea officials.
