Chris Eubank Jr’s father and trainer, Chris Eubank Sr, has now demanded that his son pull out of the Conor Benn fight on October 8th.
The British boxing legend cornered his son for much of the early part of his career, but in recent years he has taken a back seat.
However, when the fight with Conor was signed for October 8, Chris Jr revealed that he had approached his father with the prospect of returning to his corner for the contest against the son of his old nemesis , Nigel Benn.
Chris Sr initially agreed, but has now told the media that he is asking for his son to be removed from the competition.
He said this was due to concerns about his son making the agreed-upon 157 pounds.
While on a joint Zoom call with Conor and Nigel on Monday, Chris Sr surprised the pair by informing them of his new stance.
He said in quotes reported by the Mail: “If you have a child and someone is trying to take that child away from you and do something bad to him, as a parent you wouldn’t let them. That’s all I’m doing…
“This is modern ‘gladiatia’, this is not a game for the public.
“We have to be strict, otherwise lives are put in danger and my son’s life cannot be put in danger.
“I’ve already lost one. It can’t happen again.”
Chris Jr’s brother Sebastian tragically died aged 29 last year.
“I gave him my direction,” said Chris Jr.’s Chris Sr.
“If he doesn’t want to follow him, he will be dragged away. But he will do what suits him…
“He’s dropping below 160 pounds, which can’t happen on my watch.”
At one point in the conversation, Nigel asked Chris Sr: “So you’re putting your foot down, telling your son, at 32, ‘This fight isn’t happening’.”
And Chris Sr replied, “Absolutely.”
Meanwhile, Conor poked fun at his rival on social media, posting a photo of himself and boxer Felix Cash with the caption: “Just went 10 rounds…while someone has daddy issues.” He also posted a photo of himself and the rival side by side to show who he thought was the more grounded of the two.
