Kalvin Phillips faces a race to be fit enough in time for the World Cup with the England star set to undergo shoulder surgery.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed he had no choice but to send Phillips into surgery to deal with a recurring shoulder injury which has affected the player’s availability this season.

The defensive midfielder moved to the Etihad from Leeds in the summer for £45m but is yet to start for the Citizens, having made just three substitute appearances so far, amassing just 13 minutes of football .

And after re-injuring his shoulder in August’s mid-season friendly with Barcelona, Phillips was absent from City’s win at Wolves last Saturday.

‘I do not know [how long he will be out] – I’m not a doctor’, said Guardiola.

“But in a good way he can reach the World Cup. The doctor said the only solution right now is to do what he has to do. Now it won’t be long, but a little longer.

‘Every time it comes out [the shoulder]it’s out and the doctors say that when you have three or four times where it’s out with your shoulder, the only solution is surgery’.

Earlier in the week, Phillips was named in the England squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany, the final international games before the start of the World Cup in November.

He has now officially retired, and is now at risk of missing the plane to Qatar due to fitness, which could seriously hamper the Three Lions’ chances of taking the football home.

The 26-year-old was named England’s player of the year for 2021, having started every game for his country up to the Euro final, and has proved a key player in Gareth Southgate’s side .

England are particularly short in midfield at the moment, with Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson also out through injury, leaving just Jude Bellingham, Mason Mount, Declan Rice and James Ward-Prowse in the Three Lions squad.
